About this image
A lion in meditation. The image should be contradictory -- predators do not sit still with their eyes closed -- but Yoga Narasimha makes it feel inevitable. The fierce avatar, having completed his purpose, sits in padmasana with four arms in meditation mudras, the golden mane falling softly around a face that has found perfect stillness. Above him, Adishesha -- the cosmic serpent on whom Vishnu reclines in the ocean of milk -- spreads his multiple hoods as a canopy. The serpent's presence connects this form to Vishnu's cosmic identity. Narasimha is not a separate god. He is Vishnu in a specific mode, and when the mode shifts from wrath to contemplation, the serpent returns. The Yoga Narasimha form is particularly important in the Ahobilam tradition of Andhra Pradesh, where one of the nine shrines is dedicated specifically to this meditative aspect. The famous Yoga Narasimha temple at Melkote in Karnataka houses a stunning Hoysala-period sculpture that perfectly captures this blend of leonine power and yogic calm. The South Indian bronze sculpture style of this HD wallpaper adds weight and permanence. Bronze Narasimha figures from the Chola period (9th-13th century) are among the finest examples of Indian metallurgy. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
