About this image
The sacred bride walks toward her eternal bridegroom. This rendition of Andal in full bridal regalia captures the weight and wonder of the moment -- the crimson silk of her wedding sari so richly woven with gold that it seems to glow with its own light, the temple jewelry of the Srirangam tradition adorning her from crown to waist, the bridal garland fragrant with the jasmine that is inseparable from Tamil weddings. But this is no ordinary wedding. The bridegroom is Ranganatha -- Lord Vishnu reclining on the cosmic serpent Adishesha, the Preserver of the Universe, the one Andal has loved since childhood with an intensity that redefined what devotion means. In Tamil Vaishnavism, Andal's marriage to Ranganatha is not allegory. It is theology made history. The Srivaishnava acharyas (teachers) treat her divine wedding as a literal event that demonstrates the ultimate possibility of bhakti -- the soul can actually unite with God, not metaphorically but really. Andal proved it by doing it. Her title "Nachiyar" means "goddess" or "divine lady" -- and in Tamil Nadu she is worshipped with the same honors as Lakshmi herself. The annual Aadi Pooram festival re-enacts this sacred wedding with elaborate ritual: Andal's processional deity is carried from Srivilliputhur and ceremonially wedded to Ranganatha amid thousands of devotees, music, and flowers. It is one of the most emotionally charged festivals in South Indian Hinduism. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
