About this image

The first light of Margazhi morning -- the most sacred month in the Tamil devotional calendar -- finds Andal seated in a garden at dawn, composing the verses that would become the Thiruppavai. A palm-leaf manuscript rests in her hands, the ancient writing medium of Tamil Nadu, and her parrot companion listens from a nearby branch as though understanding every word. The Thiruppavai is not simply poetry. It is a spiritual technology -- 30 verses designed to be sung on each of the 30 days of Margazhi (December-January), the month when the sun is weakest and devotion burns brightest. Each verse wakes another gopi from sleep to join in the procession to Krishna, but the waking is metaphorical: Andal is waking the soul from its sleep of worldly attachment. The philosophical depth embedded in these seemingly simple pastoral verses is remarkable. Verse 1 begins with the cosmic context -- the dharma of the Margazhi observance. By verse 10, Andal is knocking on the doors of sleeping friends. By verse 20, the group has reached Krishna's palace. By verse 29, they stand before Him. Verse 30 delivers the theological payload: the purpose of all this devotion is not personal gain but the joy of serving God for His sake alone. The great Ramanuja (1017-1137 CE) said: "If one understands the Thiruppavai, one has understood the essence of the Vedas, the Vedangas, and the Divya Prabandham." Coming from the greatest Vaishnava philosopher, this is the highest possible praise. Free HD download.
