About this image

Early morning at the shrine, and the only witnesses are the oil lamps and the stone deity. Andal extends the garland -- the one she wore first, the one that carries her fragrance, the one that Lord Vishnu prefers above all others. The moment is charged with a tenderness that transcends ordinary worship. This is not ritual performance but private communion between devotee and God, captured in classical Indian art that treats the sacred moment with the reverence it deserves. The theological implications of Andal's garland-wearing are profound and were the subject of intense discussion among later Srivaishnava acharyas. Pillai Lokacharya (13th century), one of the greatest Srivaishnava theologians, used Andal's story to illustrate the concept of "purushakara" -- the intercessor who bridges the gap between the soul and God. Just as the garland, having touched Andal, becomes more acceptable to God, so does the soul, having been touched by the love of a great devotee, become more acceptable to the divine. Vedanta Desika, another titan of Srivaishnava philosophy, wrote an entire work (Godastuti) praising Andal, calling her "the creeper of the earth that climbed to heaven." The image of Andal at the shrine represents the climax of bhakti -- the moment when all distance between human and divine collapses. She does not stand outside the shrine looking in; she reaches into the sanctum, her garland the bridge between her world and His. In Srivaishnava homes during Margazhi, families recreate this scene with their own home shrines, offering garlands while reciting Andal's verses. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
