Golden afternoon light transforms a jasmine-scented garden into a sacred space as Andal stands at its center, holding a lotus with both hands in the traditional gesture of offering. Her green silk sari catches the light in rippling folds of emerald and gold; the heavy gold border speaks of her status not as a mortal woman but as Bhudevi -- an incarnation of the Earth Goddess herself, according to Srivaishnava theology. The tulasi woven into her hair releases its distinctive fragrance, sacred to Lord Vishnu and inseparable from Andal worship. In Srivilliputhur today, Andal is worshipped not merely as a saint but as a goddess. Her temple -- the Andal Temple, with its famous 192-foot gopuram that appears on the Tamil Nadu state emblem -- draws thousands of devotees, especially during the Margazhi season (December-January) when her Thiruppavai is sung in every Vishnu temple across Tamil Nadu. The Thiruppavai describes Andal waking the gopis of Vrindavan to join her in devotion to Krishna, but the verses are far more than narrative poetry. They contain profound Vaishnava theology wrapped in the language of a lovesick bride. The great philosopher Ramanuja (11th century) considered the Thiruppavai so important that he wrote a commentary on it, calling Andal "one who gave us the essence of the Vedas."
