The opening words of the Thiruppavai in elegant gold Tamil calligraphy on a deep maroon background with lotus border: "Margazhi thingal mathi niraindha nannaalaal" -- "In the auspicious month of Margazhi, on a full moon day..." These twelve syllables have been sung at dawn in every Vishnu temple across Tamil Nadu for over 1,200 years, making them among the most continuously recited words in all of Hindu devotional literature. The Thiruppavai opens not with an invocation to a deity but with a description of the season -- the cold Margazhi month, the full moon, the auspicious day. Andal grounds her devotion in the physical world before lifting it to the spiritual. This is characteristic of her genius: she begins with what the body feels (cold morning, dark sky, reluctance to leave the warm bed) and transforms it into what the soul knows (the urgency of devotion, the beauty of communal worship, the joy of approaching God together). Tamil script -- one of the oldest living scripts in the world, with a continuous literary tradition spanning over 2,000 years -- is the medium through which these verses have been transmitted. The rounded, flowing forms of Tamil letters are particularly suited to calligraphic art, and the gold against maroon creates a visual warmth that matches the devotional warmth of the words. The lotus border is not merely decorative: the lotus is Lakshmi's symbol, and Andal, as a form of Bhudevi (Earth Goddess, one of Vishnu's consorts), is inseparable from Lakshmi in Srivaishnava theology.
