Attukal Pongala is a ten-day festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, culminating in the Pongala day, where millions of women cook a ritual offering of rice, jaggery, and coconut in earthen pots on makeshift hearths along the streets. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized it as the largest gathering of women for a single event, with over 3.5 million women participating. The festival celebrates the Goddess Attukal Bhagavathy, believed to be an incarnation of Parvati who fought demons. Only women participate in the Pongala ritual, lining streets for several kilometers around the temple, each with her own hearth. The temple priest lights the first hearth and the sacred fire is passed from pot to pot. The cooked sweet pongala is offered to the goddess and then shared. The festival also features Kappuram (a ritual fire-walking ceremony) and Kuruthola (young palm leaf decorations). It is a powerful expression of feminine devotion unique to Kerala.
