Holika Dahan takes place on the night before Holi and involves the ritual burning of a bonfire symbolizing the destruction of the demoness Holika. According to the Prahlada legend, Holika, who had a boon of fire immunity, sat in a blazing fire with her nephew Prahlada to kill him on orders of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. But Prahlada, a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, emerged unscathed while Holika burned. Communities across India gather around the bonfire, perform parikrama (circumambulation), and offer coconut, grains, and other items to the fire. The ritual is performed at a specific muhurat time after sunset. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, the celebrations are particularly elaborate. In parts of Madhya Pradesh, people walk on the embers as an act of faith. The festival symbolizes the victory of devotion and righteousness over arrogance and evil, setting the stage for the colorful Holi celebrations the next morning.
