Sita stands in a garden that could be Mithila or could be Ayodhya -- it does not matter, because wherever she is becomes a place of grace. Fair golden skin, green silk sari with a gold border that catches the light, lotus flower held loosely in one hand. The jasmine bushes behind her are in full bloom, their white flowers scenting the air that surrounds her. In the Ramayana, Sita is introduced as the daughter of the earth itself. King Janaka of Mithila found her in a furrow while plowing a sacrificial field -- she emerged from the soil, fully formed, divinely beautiful. Her name means "furrow," and her origin connects her permanently to the earth, to fertility, to the cycles of growth and harvest that sustain all life. But Sita is far more than a pastoral figure. She is Lakshmi incarnate -- the goddess of wealth and fortune who chose to accompany Vishnu (as Rama) into exile. When Rama was banished to the forest for fourteen years, Sita could have stayed in the palace. She chose the forest. That choice defines her character more than any other moment in the epic.
