The Agni Pariksha is the most debated episode in the Ramayana. After Rama defeats Ravana and rescues Sita from Lanka, he expresses doubt about her purity during captivity. Sita, rather than argue, chooses to walk into fire. Agni, the god of fire, refuses to burn her and returns her to Rama, declaring her spotless. Interpretations of this scene vary enormously across traditions. Some read it as Sita's vindication -- proof of her absolute purity. Others read it as a critique of patriarchal doubt -- the fact that she had to prove anything at all. The Adbhuta Ramayana goes further, revealing that the "real" Sita was hidden by fire before the abduction, and the Sita in Lanka was a shadow-Sita all along.
