About this image
The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most sacred place in Buddhism -- is captured here at the golden hour, when the ancient stone towers glow in warm amber light and the entire site takes on the atmosphere of living history. The pyramidal tower of the main temple rises against a dramatic sky, its carved stone faces telling the story of two and a half millennia of unbroken Buddhist pilgrimage. Colorful prayer flags stream from every point, their prayers carried on the wind to every corner of the earth. In the courtyard, the descendant of the original Bodhi tree spreads its branches. Monks in saffron and maroon robes move through the grounds as silhouettes against the warm light -- their footsteps following paths worn smooth by countless millions of pilgrims before them. Bodh Gaya is the site where Prince Siddhartha Gautama, after years of austere practice, chose the Middle Way between luxury and extreme asceticism and sat under the Bodhi tree with a single determination: he would not rise until he had found the answer to suffering. After 49 days of meditation, he attained Bodhi -- perfect awakening -- and became the Buddha, the Awakened One. The Mahabodhi Temple was first built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, rebuilt in its current form in the 5th-6th century CE, and has drawn pilgrims continuously since. Today it receives millions of Buddhist visitors from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Korea, Myanmar, and every corner of the Buddhist world.
