When the divine fruit of knowledge was offered as a prize by sage Narada, Ganesha won it by circumambulating his parents (declaring them his entire world), while Murugan, who had raced around the physical universe, arrived second. Feeling the injustice, Murugan renounced everything -- his weapons, his ornaments, his divine status -- and walked to the top of Palani hill as a naked ascetic. He became Dandayudhapani, the one whose only weapon is a staff. This act of renunciation transformed Murugan from a warrior god into a saint.
