About this image
Lord Murugan rides his peacock into battle against the demon Surapadman, the vel spear blazing with divine fire, the demon visible in the chaos of the cosmic battlefield, every detail of armor, flame, and fury rendered with the intensity of a scene that decided the fate of the universe. This vertical HD wallpaper depicts the central event of Murugan mythology: the Surasamharam, the destruction of Surapadman, celebrated annually during the festival of Skanda Shashti. Surapadman was an asura who had received a boon from Brahma that made him nearly invincible. He conquered the three worlds, imprisoned the devas, and threatened cosmic order itself. The gods pleaded with Shiva for help, and Shiva's own energy -- combined with the shakti of Parvati -- gave birth to Murugan specifically to defeat this demon. The vel in Murugan's hand is not an ordinary weapon. It is Shakti Vel, forged from the forehead flame of Parvati, the Mother Goddess herself. When Murugan hurled this vel at Surapadman, it split the demon into two halves. One half became the peacock that now serves as Murugan's mount. The other became the rooster that adorns his battle flag. This is the Tamil theological principle of transformation through divine encounter: even the enemy is not destroyed but redeemed, given purpose, made part of the divine retinue. The peacock in this image is therefore both mount and trophy, both companion and conquered foe. The rich detail of the battlefield -- fire, cosmic energy, demonic forms -- reflects the Puranic texts that describe this battle as spanning multiple realms simultaneously.
