About this image
Stone remembers what paper forgets. This HD wallpaper presents Narasimha as he has been preserved for centuries -- carved into temple pillars by sculptors whose names are lost but whose skill remains undeniable. The aged stone surface carries the patina of time, weathered by monsoons and touched by millions of devotional hands. South Indian temples contain some of the finest stone sculpture ever produced anywhere in the world. The Hoysala temples of Karnataka (12th-13th century) -- Belur, Halebidu, Somanathapura -- feature Narasimha carvings of extraordinary intricacy, with every strand of the lion's mane individually rendered in hard soapstone. The Pallava shore temples at Mahabalipuram include Narasimha panels from the 7th century that still astonish art historians. The warm temple lighting in this image is characteristic of how these sculptures are experienced in person -- oil lamps casting golden light across carved surfaces, creating shadows that make the figures seem to move. Temple architects understood that sculpture is not just about the carving but about the light that reveals it. Archaeological photography of temple sculpture serves a preservation function as well. Many of these carvings are eroding, and high-quality images are sometimes the best record we have. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
