About this image
The sacred trio of Puri -- Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra -- rendered in the iconic Pattachitra folk art style of Odisha, their large round eyes gazing outward with that distinctive expression that is simultaneously childlike and cosmic. Jagannath (black), Balabhadra (white), and Subhadra (yellow) stand in their characteristic truncated form -- no hands, no feet, just the essential divine presence reduced to its most powerful geometric expression. The Sudarshana Chakra hovers above, completing the sacred composition. The form of the Jagannath idols is unique in all of Hinduism. No other major deity is worshipped in such an abstract, stylized form. The origin story explains this: the divine craftsman Vishwakarma was carving the idols but demanded absolute privacy. When King Indradyumna's curiosity overcame him and he opened the door too early, Vishwakarma disappeared, leaving the idols unfinished -- without hands or feet. But the cosmic voice declared that the idols should be worshipped exactly as they were. And so they have been, for centuries, in a form that art historians recognize as deeply significant: the reduction of the divine to essential shapes -- circles for eyes, rectangles for bodies -- anticipates by centuries the modern art insight that abstraction can be more powerful than realism. The Jagannath Temple in Puri, one of the four sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites) of Hinduism, draws millions of devotees annually. The temple's kitchen feeds 100,000 people daily, making it the largest kitchen in the world. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
