About this image
Brightly painted and ornately framed, the Jagannath trio commands the viewer's attention with the directness that only the most confident art traditions can achieve. This Pattachitra rendition uses the full palette of Odisha's folk art tradition -- bold reds, deep blacks, bright yellows, vivid whites -- to present the three deities in their most ceremonial form, as they appear during the great festivals when the idols are freshly painted and decorated. The Pattachitra tradition of Odisha is one of India's oldest surviving folk art forms, dating back at least to the 5th century BCE. The word comes from "patta" (cloth) and "chitra" (painting) -- these intricate works were originally painted on specially treated cloth using natural pigments made from minerals, vegetables, and flowers. The colors are specific and symbolic: red from hingula (cinnabar), yellow from haritala (orpiment), black from lamp soot, white from conch shell powder. No synthetic colors were used traditionally, and even today, the traditional Pattachitra artists of Raghurajpur village near Puri maintain the ancient pigment recipes. Jagannath worship is significant beyond Hinduism. ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, founded by Swami Prabhupada in 1966) has spread Jagannath worship to every continent, with major Rath Yatra festivals held annually in London, New York, San Francisco, and dozens of other cities. The word "juggernaut" in English derives from Jagannath -- specifically from European travelers' astonished descriptions of the massive Rath Yatra chariots. Free HD download.
