This is Mahaprasad -- the sacred food of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, perhaps the most famous temple food in all of Hinduism. The kitchen of the Jagannath Temple is the largest in the world, feeding up to 100,000 people on festival days. But the most remarkable thing about it is not its scale but its method: all cooking is done using earthen pots stacked seven high over wood fires, with the top pot cooking first -- an apparent violation of physics that devotees attribute to divine intervention. The food never touches metal -- only clay, leaves, and wood -- and the recipes have remained unchanged for centuries. Mahaprasad holds a unique theological status in Hindu worship. Once food has been offered to Jagannath and accepted (through prescribed rituals), it is no longer ordinary food -- it is the Lord's grace made edible. And in a revolutionary social statement, Mahaprasad abolishes caste: all devotees, regardless of caste or social status, eat together from the same Mahaprasad. This principle, enforced at the Puri temple for centuries, predates modern anti-caste movements by hundreds of years.
