About this image
Lord Jagannath at the center of a Pattachitra masterpiece -- surrounded by intricate floral scrollwork and bordered by panels depicting scenes from the Puranas, rendered in the traditional natural pigments that Odisha's folk artists have used for over two thousand years. The warm reds from hingula, the bright yellows from haritala, the deep blacks from lamp soot, the clean whites from conch shell powder -- each color ground by hand and applied with brushes made from the hair of domestic animals. Pattachitra painting is centered in the village of Raghurajpur, near Puri, where virtually every family is engaged in some form of traditional art. The village has been designated a Heritage Crafts Village by the Indian government, and UNESCO has recognized Pattachitra as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The art form is inseparable from the Jagannath tradition -- originally, Pattachitra paintings served as portable icons for devotees who could not visit the Puri temple. A Pattachitra of Jagannath carried the same devotional power as a temple visit; it was not a souvenir but a sacred object. The intricate border panels in traditional Pattachitra follow specific narrative conventions. The outer border typically shows floral or geometric patterns. Inside this, narrative panels depict the Dashavatara (ten avatars of Vishnu) or scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The central figure -- Jagannath -- is always the largest and most detailed. The composition thus moves from the decorative to the narrative to the divine, guiding the viewer's eye inward toward the heart of the painting. Free HD download.
