The preparation recipe has been passed down within artist families for generations, and small variations in the formula are closely guarded secrets. Art historians consider Pattachitra one of the most technically demanding folk art forms in the world. The fine lines, the precise color fills, the intricate patterns that repeat without variation across the entire painting -- all executed freehand, without pencil outlines, using brushes of animal hair dipped in natural pigments. A single large Pattachitra can take months to complete. The UNESCO recognition of Pattachitra has brought international attention to Raghurajpur, but the artists themselves are clear about their primary purpose: they paint not for galleries or tourists but for Jagannath.
