About this image
Before the battles, before the Vel, before the title of Deva Senapati -- Kartikeya was simply a child in his mother's lap. This HD wallpaper captures that tender moment: Bala Murugan (the young Murugan) sitting on Parvati's lap, a small peacock feather toy nearby, his expression curious and playful rather than martial. The story of Kartikeya's childhood is unusual among Hindu deities. He was not raised by his biological parents initially. The six sparks from Shiva's third eye fell into the Ganges, were carried to a lake of reeds (Saravana), and there took the form of six babies. The six Krittikas (Pleiades) nursed them. When Parvati arrived, she embraced all six babies, and they merged into one child with six faces -- Shanmukha, the six-faced god. This wallpaper shows the period after that reunion -- Parvati finally holding her son, the child she had performed severe tapasya to conceive. The garden setting is peaceful, domestic, a divine family at rest. The small peacock feather hints at the future: the peacock that will become his mount, the warrior life that awaits. Bala Murugan images are particularly popular in South Indian homes with young children. The child form makes the god approachable, relatable -- a divine playmate for human children.
