About this image
Celestial clouds part around the peacock's iridescent tail as Kartikeya surveys his domain. The golden armor is not ceremonial -- this is the commander who led the devas to victory against Tarakasura when no other god could. The Vel gleams with accumulated power, a weapon forged by Shakti herself and given to her son for the specific purpose of slaying the unkillable demon. The Skanda Purana -- the largest of the eighteen Mahapuranas with over 81,000 verses -- is dedicated entirely to Kartikeya's mythology. It narrates his birth, his childhood among the Krittikas, his military campaigns, and his role as the guardian of dharma in the cosmic order. In North Indian tradition, Kartikeya is celebrated as the ideal warrior-prince: disciplined, brave, compassionate in victory. Unlike Indra, whose military leadership is often marked by pride and occasional cowardice, Kartikeya's warfare is dharmic from start to finish. He fights only when necessary and shows mercy when the battle is won. The celestial cloud background places Kartikeya in his proper domain -- between heaven and earth, the bridge between divine will and earthly action. The peacock's displayed feathers create a natural mandala behind him. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
