About this image
The peacock spreads its tail feathers in full display, and atop this living throne sits Kartikeya -- the eternal youth, the divine commander, the god who makes war beautiful. Golden armor catches celestial light. The Vel, his signature weapon, rests in his right hand -- not raised in aggression but held upright, ready. This is a god at rest between battles. Kartikeya is known by different names across India: Murugan in Tamil Nadu, Subramanya in Karnataka, Skanda in the Vedic texts, Kumara (the eternal youth) in classical Sanskrit literature. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati, born from six sparks of Shiva's third eye that fell into the river Ganges and were nursed by the six Krittikas (Pleiades star cluster) -- hence the name Kartikeya. The peacock Paravani is not just a mount but a symbol. The peacock kills snakes, and in Hindu symbolism, snakes represent ego and desire. Kartikeya riding the peacock represents the soul that has conquered its lower nature and ascended to divine consciousness. In North India, Kartikeya is worshipped primarily during Skanda Shashthi and Kartik Purnima. The Kartik month (October-November) is named after him.
