Devasena (also called Indra Valli or Deva Sena) is the daughter of Indra, the king of the gods -- she represents celestial beauty, divine order, and the establishment's blessing. Valli is a tribal chieftain's daughter whom Kartikeya pursued and won through a romantic adventure involving disguises, a wild elephant, and his brother Ganesha's help -- she represents earthly devotion, passionate love, and the connection between the divine and the common people. Together, the two consorts create a balance. Kartikeya is not only the god of the heavens (through Devasena) but also the god of the earth, the hills, and the tribal communities (through Valli). In Tamil Nadu, the Valli Thirukalyanam -- the wedding of Kartikeya and Valli -- is one of the most celebrated temple festival events.
