Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, is a deeply sacred day observed by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. For Hindus, it commemorates the day Lord Shiva slew the demon Tripurasura and is also known as Tripurari Purnima. Devotees light lamps on riverbanks and float them on water in a spectacular display called Dev Deepawali, famously celebrated at the ghats of Varanasi where thousands of earthen lamps illuminate the steps along the Ganges. It is considered one of the most auspicious days for bathing in sacred rivers. In Odisha, the Boita Bandana festival is held where miniature boats are floated to commemorate the ancient maritime traders of Kalinga. For Jains, it marks the nirvana of several important figures. For Sikhs, it coincides with the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak (Guru Nanak Jayanti). The festival is observed across India with particular prominence in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan.
