About this image
The exterior of a Jain temple in its full classical splendor -- white marble shikhara (tower) rising against a brilliant blue sky, its surface covered in carved figures and ornamental patterns that catch the light and shadow in constantly shifting patterns. The ornate entrance features a torana (decorative arch) of intricate Jain iconography. Stone steps lead up to the threshold, flanked by stone lion guardians -- symbols of courage and royal lineage (the lion is also the symbol of Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara). Everything about this exterior communicates the same message as the interior: that devotion, when expressed through human skill, can transform matter into a vehicle for the transcendent. Jain temple architecture follows the Nagara style of North Indian temple construction, in which a shikhara (curved tower) rises above the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) housing the main idol. The shikhara is covered in amalaka (ribbed stone discs) and crowned with a kalasha (pot finial) that symbolizes the liberated soul. The tower visually dramatizes the upward aspiration of Jain spiritual practice: the soul rising through successive stages of purity until it reaches the very top of the universe (the Siddhashila) where liberated souls reside. Unlike Hindu temples, Jain temples are notable for the consistent absence of any imagery suggesting violence or worldly desire -- no weapons, no hunting scenes, no erotic sculpture. Only the pure forms of the Tirthankaras and the celestial beings who honor them. This white marble clarity mirrors the Jain ideal of the purified soul.
