The mathematical significance of 1,444 is deliberate -- in Jain cosmology, 1,444 pillars reflect a specific sacred number. But the architectural achievement transcends symbolism: that each of the 1,444 pillars is completely unique, carved by a different craftsman with a different pattern, means that the temple was conceived as a community project -- 1,444 individual acts of devotion contributing to a single sacred whole. The Ranakpur Chaturmukha Dharana Vihara (temple of four-faced worship) in Rajasthan's Pali district was built in the 15th century CE under the patronage of Seth Dharna Shah. It is dedicated to Tirthankara Rishabhadeva (Adinatha), the first of the 24 Tirthankaras. The "Chaturmukha" design means the central idol can be worshipped from all four directions simultaneously -- North, South, East, and West. The temple covers 48,000 square feet and rises to 100 feet.
