About this image
Lord Mahavira in golden splendor -- a magnificent Mahavira murti (sacred idol) in padmasana (lotus pose) at the heart of an ornate Jain temple interior, its marble pillars and intricately carved ceilings forming a canopy of sacred art around the central figure. The golden statue radiates warmth in the soft glow of traditional brass lamps. At the base, offerings of fresh flowers, marigolds, and rice have been arranged with devotional care -- the traditional Jain puja elements that form the foundation of lay practice. Jain worship of Tirthankara idols is called "Pratikraman" or "Puja," and it takes many forms. In the Shvetambara tradition, the idol is adorned with flowers, sandalwood paste, incense, lamps, rice, sweets, and fruits. In the Digambara tradition, the idol is worshipped in its natural state -- unclothed and unadorned, representing the Tirthankara's absolute renunciation of all possessions. What both traditions share is the understanding that the idol is not being asked for favors -- Tirthankaras, having achieved Moksha, are beyond the world and cannot intervene in human affairs. Rather, worship of the idol is a meditation on the qualities of the Tirthankara -- a model for the worshipper's own soul to aspire toward. The Jain concept is "aham brahmasmi" in a different key: the soul that now stands before the golden idol has the same nature as the soul the idol represents -- infinite knowledge, infinite perception, infinite power, infinite bliss. The difference is only in the quantity of karma covering the soul. This HD Mahavira wallpaper inspires that aspiration. Free download.
