About this image
From the air, the sight of Palitana's Shatrunjaya hill takes the breath away: hundreds of white marble Jain temples clustered together on the summit, creating what appears to be a sacred city in the sky -- an entire civilization of devotion perched above the green Gujarat plains. Against the blue sky, the white temples glow with a purity that seems almost impossible -- a human construction that looks as if it was placed there by divine intention. Shatrunjaya ("the place of victory over oneself") is considered the most sacred pilgrimage site in Jainism -- the "Hill of the Conquerors." It is said that Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, first preached from this hill. More than 900 temples now cover its slopes, making it the largest collection of Jain temples in the world at a single site. The hill is approximately 600 metres high, and the ascent requires climbing 3,500 stone steps -- a pilgrimage that devout Jains make barefoot. There is a strictly observed rule: no one may spend the night on Shatrunjaya hill -- by sunset, every visitor must have descended, leaving the hill to the souls of the Siddhas (liberated beings) who are believed to dwell there. The earliest temples date to the 11th century CE; rebuilding has been continuous since. Wealthy Jain merchants have funded extraordinary constructions over the centuries -- some temples are encrusted with gold and precious stones. The entire complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. This aerial HD wallpaper captures the magnificent scope of humanity's most concentrated act of collective architectural devotion.
