About this image
Lord Mahavira stands in Kayotsarga -- the standing meditation posture that is unique to Jain ascetic practice and among the most demanding forms of meditation in any tradition. The arms hang completely straight down at the sides, not touching the body. The feet are slightly apart. The eyes are cast downward. The body is entirely still -- not the stillness of relaxation, but the stillness of supreme inner effort. In this posture, Mahavira would remain motionless for hours, days, sometimes weeks, allowing insects to crawl across His skin without moving, enduring extremes of heat and cold without seeking shelter. Around Him in this image, nature grows undisturbed -- vines and flowering plants creep up around His feet and legs, birds perch on His shoulders, a deer grazes nearby. Nature recognizes His harmlessness and treats Him as part of the landscape rather than a threat. This is ahimsa in its most absolute form: such total non-violence that the natural world no longer reacts to your presence. Kayotsarga means literally "abandoning the body" -- a meditation in which the practitioner identifies completely with the soul and not at all with the physical form. Pain, discomfort, fatigue, hunger -- all the signals of the body -- are observed with pure detachment. The body is allowed to be exactly what it is without any reaction from the consciousness within it. For 12.5 years, this was Lord Mahavira's daily practice. He would beg food when He moved, eat without cooking, sleep in the open. This period of his life is called Chadmastha -- the period of ignorance before Kevala Jnana. This HD wallpaper captures the extraordinary discipline and grace of that journey. Free download.
