In concentric rings that seem to extend beyond the edges of the visible, listeners of every kind are gathered: gods and celestial beings nearest to the center, humans next, and in the outermost rings, animals of every species -- all sitting in peaceful coexistence, all turned toward the source of wisdom at the center. The Samavasarana is described in the Jain Agamas (scriptures) with remarkable architectural precision: it is composed of three concentric circular walls made of precious stones, gold, and silver respectively. The inner wall is for gods, the middle for humans, the outer for animals and birds. Four torana gates in the cardinal directions allow entry. The Tirthankara faces all four directions simultaneously -- another miracle of the Samavasarana. All languages are understood by all listeners -- humans hear in their own language, animals in theirs. The Samavasarana teaches that liberation is available to every being -- not just humans, but in the Jain understanding, ultimately every jiva (soul) in the cosmos.
