About this image
Lord Neminatha -- the 22nd Tirthankara, depicted here in His characteristic blue skin tone with the conch shell (his symbol animal) at the base of His golden throne -- holds a unique place among the 24 Tirthankaras because of His connection to Lord Krishna. According to both Jain texts and some Puranic traditions, Neminatha was Krishna's cousin -- the son of Samudravijaya, brother of Vasudeva (Krishna's father). In the Jain Mahabharata tradition, Neminatha and Krishna were contemporaries and close relatives who took completely divergent paths: Krishna became the greatest monarch and hero of His age, while Neminatha renounced a royal marriage and became a monk who achieved liberation. The story of Neminatha's renunciation is one of the most moving in Jain literature. He was about to marry Princess Rajimati of Saurashtra when, as His wedding procession passed the royal stables, He heard the crying of animals penned there to be slaughtered for the wedding feast. Moved by their suffering, He stopped the procession, ordered the animals freed, and renounced the marriage, the kingdom, and the world on the spot. He then meditated on Mount Girnar (now a major Jain pilgrimage site in Gujarat), where He attained Kevala Jnana. The abandoned Rajimati herself later became a Jain nun and also attained liberation. The mountain backdrop in this image references Mount Girnar. The blue skin color in some Jain artistic traditions indicates a soul of particular spiritual purity.
