About this image
Lord Rishabhadeva -- also known as Adinatha, "the first lord" -- was the first of the 24 Tirthankaras of the current cosmic cycle and, according to Jain tradition, the founder of human civilization itself. This magnificent HD wallpaper captures Him in deep meditation, seated before a mountain landscape that evokes the spiritual grandeur of His cosmic significance. His most distinctive feature is immediately visible: long matted hair (jata) flowing down His shoulders -- unique among all 24 Tirthankaras, as He gave His hair away at the time of renunciation rather than following the later Jain practice of hair-pulling (loch). At the base of His throne, His symbol animal: the bull (vrishabha), from which He takes His name Rishabhadeva -- "Lord of the Bull." Rishabhadeva's importance in Jain cosmology cannot be overstated. He is credited not only with achieving liberation (Moksha) in this cosmic cycle but also with teaching humanity the basic arts of civilization: agriculture, fire-making, cooking, writing, mathematics, governance, and social organization. His 100 sons (including Bharata, the first Chakravarti, from whose name the subcontinent Bharata is named) became the first kings and administrators. His two daughters, Brahmi and Sundari, were the first women to achieve Kevala Jnana -- omniscience. Rishabhadeva is also identified in some Hindu texts with Vishnu's 8th avatar, and He appears in the Rig Veda and Bhagavata Purana, suggesting an ancient cross-tradition reverence. This HD wallpaper honors the first teacher of humanity and of liberation. Free download.
